| $@%&! level: Low “Bedroom” level: None Violence level: Low (it's mostly running away as quickly as possible) Back Cover: “Fourteen-year-old Leven Thumps (aka Lev) lives a wretched life in Burnt Culvert, Oklahoma. But everything is about to change as he learns about a secret gateway that bridges two worlds—the real world and Foo, a place created at the beginning of time that makes it possible for humans to dream and hope, aspire and imagine. But Foo is in chaos, and three transplants from that dreamworld have been sent to retrieve Lev, who alone has the power to save Foo. Enter Clover, a wisecracking, foot-high sidekick; Winter, a girl with a special power of her own; and Geth, the rightful heir to Foo. Their mission: to convince Lev that he has the power to save Foo. Can this unique band of travelers help Lev overcome his doubt? Will Lev find the gateway in time? Or will Sabine and his dark shadows find the gateway first and destroy humanity?” |
One thing I'm not so crazy about is Leven's attitude toward the whole thing. He does a lot of the thinking he's crazy, or that Winter is crazy, or that he just doesn't want any part of it. In spite of having a home life on the level with Harry Potter at the Dursley's, or worse, he keeps wanting to just go home and not have to deal with shadows or magical worlds. Unfortunately for him, that isn't an option, because the shadows know where he lives.
So then it's a race combined with a puzzle, because first of all they have to figure out exactly how a person gets into Foo, and then they have to figure out how a gateway got built in the first place. After that, they have to figure out how to get across the Atlantic and several foreign countries in order to get there. The creative ways they come up with to solve their problems and fight the shadows are pretty entertaining. And if that isn't enough, there's always Clover with the comic relief, because there's nothing better than a pint-sized weird little creature to lighten the mood.
